Schematic image representative of the sex specific white matter involved in ALS. While the corpus callosum exhibits difference in both male and female brains, sex difference in atrophy of the corticospinal tract is region dependent. Atrophy of the lateral regions (precentral gyrus) is more pronounced in females while the internal capsule shows atrophy in male ALS patients. In addition, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the forceps major show atrophy in female brains when compared to their control group.
